From June 10-14, the Choctaw church brought Thunder Island VBS to its youth. Our church had not hosted a VBS for several years, so members and youth alike were thrilled to finally learn more about God in this fun way. Our many helpers did a wonderful job of bringing the Bible stories—all of which centered around the 3-½ years of Jesus’ public ministry—to life.
Linda Lambeth, VBS leader, greeted the children each morning and told them more about Thunder Island. She was ably assisted during the opening and closing segments by Sean and Kristin O’Connor, the faithful lifeguards, along with special appearances by Cosmo the Parrot, who kept the children laughing all week.
The children eagerly went to the different stations to learn more about Jesus and to apply that learning in different ways. The different groups rotated through a prayer station, a Bible story station, a snack station, and a craft station before returning to the sanctuary for the closing segment.
On the closing Sabbath of VBS, the children came into the sanctuary during the worship service and sat in their various groups, as they had done all week. Each of the VBS teachers gave a short description of their station, often asking the children to help them.
I’m guessing that many of the grown-ups went home on Sabbath wishing they had been able to attend with the children! It was a wonderful week, and we are already looking forward to next year’s vacation Bible school!
