Philosophy of Ministry

The Oklahoma Conference vision is to develop a culture of healthy, Christ-centered, Seventh-day Adventist disciple-makers. In harmony with our Conference mission and core values, the Ministerial Department seeks to support and develop pastors who live and lead toward that vision. (okadventist.org)

Ephesians 4:11-16 shapes our understanding of pastoral ministry. We believe Christ gives pastoral leaders to His church to equip His people for ministry and build up His body toward unity, maturity, faithfulness to truth, and Christlikeness. Pastors faithfully exercise their own ministry while intentionally developing others for theirs so that the whole body participates meaningfully under the headship of Christ.

ABIDE: The Pastor Is First a Disciple of Jesus

Fruitful pastoral ministry flows from an abiding relationship with Jesus Christ (John 15:4-5). Pastors are first disciples who continue growing in communion with God, Christlike character, biblical faithfulness, and a clear sense of calling. We seek to faithfully steward our spiritual, relational, physical, family, and personal lives so that ministry flows from life with Christ and can be sustained with integrity over time.

MAKE DISCIPLES: Disciple-Making Is the Aim of Ministry

Christ calls His church to make mature, Christ-centered Seventh-day Adventist disciples who increasingly help others follow Jesus (Matthew 28:18-20).

​

Disciple-making includes helping people encounter Christ and respond to the everlasting gospel, shepherding and nurturing them within the body of Christ, restoring those who are drifting, and helping believers grow toward maturity, meaningful ministry, and becoming disciple-makers themselves.

​

A disciple-maker is a Christ-centered follower of Jesus who intentionally invests in others to help them become mature disciples and disciple-makers of Jesus Christ.

EQUIP: The Pastor Equips Disciples for Ministry

Pastors faithfully exercise their own ministry while intentionally equipping disciples for theirs. Following Ephesians 4:11-16, pastors help believers discover and develop their God-given gifts, assume meaningful responsibility, serve effectively, and increasingly equip others. Healthy pastoral leadership does not foster dependency upon the pastor; it develops a body in which members participate meaningfully in the life and mission of the church.

ENGAGE: We Follow Christ’s Method in Mission

We believe mission follows the pattern of Jesus: entering people’s lives, demonstrating genuine care, responding to needs, building trusted relationships, and inviting people to follow Him. We do not separate compassionate presence from gospel invitation. Pastors lead congregations beyond an inward focus and into meaningful relationships with the communities they are called to serve. This reflects Ellen White’s description of Christ’s method in The Ministry of Healing, p. 143.

NURTURE: We Nurture Faith Across Generations

We believe faith is nurtured within relationships and across generations. Homes, churches, and schools are vital environments where faith is lived, taught, modeled, and passed on (Deuteronomy 6:4-9; Psalm 78:1-8). Pastors encourage healthy families, intentional intergenerational relationships, and strong partnership among families, congregations, and educators so that people of every generation can grow as disciples and participate meaningfully together in Christ’s mission.

LEAD & GROW TOGETHER: Pastors Lead as Servants and Grow in Community

Pastoral leadership reflects the character of Jesus through humility, integrity, service, collaboration, accountability, and responsible stewardship (Mark 10:42-45; 1 Peter 5:2-3). Pastors provide clear leadership while listening well, developing shared ownership of mission, honoring appropriate accountability, and leading by example. We also believe pastors grow best in community through mentoring, peer relationships, honest feedback, continued learning, and mutual encouragement.

Our Commitment

The Oklahoma Conference Ministerial Department exists to support, equip, develop, and encourage pastors as they live and lead according to these convictions. Together, we seek to cultivate pastors who abide in Christ, make disciples, equip others for ministry, engage their communities through Christ’s method, nurture faith across generations, and lead and grow together.
